New Drone Models – DJI Mavic and GoPro Karma

Some quick thoughts on the newly announced drone models –

DJI’s Mavic versus GoPro’s Karma

These are both relatively new small and compact form-factor drones. Yes, Parrot and some others have made $400 drones this size for years, but they aren’t capable of long, stable flights or images of this caliber. Mavic and Karma are designed for consumers that want an ultraportable drone that’s relatively simple. These may not be main workhorse commercial or quite even pro-level consumer drones, but they can still be useful for agriculture. The Inspire and  Phantom models are almost a bit large to keep in a pickup full time, but these new models would easily fit under the seat, including their controllers and spare batteries. I’m considering a Mavic as a backup to my Inspire, just out of convenience. Don’t expect these smaller drones to handle the wind as well, nor have quite the image quality of a Phantom, Inspire, etc (although quality should be really close); But like photographers say, the best camera (drone) is the one you’ll carry with you and use.

Logistics – The Biggest Current AgTech Opportunity

I’ve recently discovered some smartphone and tablet apps that have brought me to think more about logistics. Logistics tools used effectively can be a great addition to efficiency via savings of time, fuel, mileage, money, etc.

Why “Unlimited Data” Plans are Making a Comeback

Remember when 3G data starting coming out in the mid 2000’s? (Sometimes call EVDO / HSPA depending on your carrier, EDGE was more like 2.5G). Data plans were growing in popularity back then, but they were very limited… For a while at least

Fall 2016 Software Update Concerns

I realize many of you have already started (or heck down south even completed) harvest, but a word of caution on software updates for 2630 displays and 3000 GPS receivers. According to @macintoshdaddy on Twitter and his thread on New Ag Talk , there are some pretty major bugs in the Fall 2016 update (2630 ver 3.33.1455 / 3000 ver 2.30X). These issues may result in the display freezing up and needing to be unplugged. Since the display likely won’t shut down properly, you may lose data that was recorded since it was last turned on.

“No Longer Supported”

You know what phrase I’m getting sick of hearing lately?

“We will be ending support for ___” – or – “No longer supported” – or sometimes its just – “Not supported”

These are all such generic phrases that spread mass confusion, and sometimes even panic. I’ve been asked many times if the reason someones GPS or AutoTrac quits working is due to the product no longer being supported.

The Ideal Ag Equipment ‘For Sale’ Ad

Ever looked at an online listing for a piece of farm equipment and found yourself with more questions than answers? Me too, a lot. I’m a details person, so maybe it bothers me more than others, but in any case, there’s a lot of poor listings out there. Here’s my opinion on what makes a quality Ag Equipment For Sale listing.

edited 8-12-16 to add reason for selling.. thanks @jerrodwestfahl

#DeereAMS Q&A Mid April 2016

So apparently a lot of good old basics are getting glossed over in the grand complexity of things today. I don’t know if its because these things aren’t being taught at training clinics anymore, or because its more fun to get your iPad hooked up to show maps (or Spotify or Netflix). There still needs to be serious time spent on the basic building blocks of all this stuff. Software updates and their release notes, offsets and measurements, StarFire height, TCM calibrations, digging for Section Control timing; These are all things that need semi-annual or at least annual attention. Enough of the soapbox talk, here’s some more Q&A / tips I’ve been through in the past couple weeks.. Continue Reading →

[Updated for 2016] The Right Computer for Your Farm

Way back in January of 2012 I wrote a post called “The Right Computer for Your Farm”. Outside of the AMS Q&A posts I do it’s probably been the most popular one. A lot has changed since 2012, both in technology and agriculture. While we’re more reliant on the cloud and web apps, there are some things that still require a regular old computer. Here’s my updated guide for what to look for when getting a new laptop or desktop.
